If brltty finds a speaker and no braille display is it intelligent enough to come up speaking on that speaker? If so, maybe some basic slackware accessibility to the limit of brltty's speech capability can be restored. If that accessibility is sufficient to run command line interface and eventually install mate and orca is something else to consider before approaching slackware with brltty current version as a partial solution to their loss of accessibility problem. --
