I tried lots of stuff, like adjusting display resolution but no joy. I then went into cygwin properties and checked the box for Use legacy console, restarted cygwin and poof, all is working. I am not sure why, as I hadn't modified that setting but, I don't care, it is fixed now, and typing echo is working as it should, for the most part. -- Blue skies.
