keeping track of last visit

Hi,

What are good ways or direction to keep track of the last visit of a
user.  Ideally we will just put it on each request, look up the user,
update his/her last visit.  I don't think this is good performance-wise.

Do you guys have a general idea or directions what to use?  Thanks.
