upgrade from RH 2.1 AS to RH 3

There is a RedHat 2.1 As I wanted to upgrade to RH AS 3.

Before upgrading the system I wanted to get used to it,
so I installed AS 3 in another fresh development server.
Once installed I wanted to try the upgrade option. So I
tried to install again on the development server, over
the redhat 3 installation I just made.

Surprisingly, after typing "upgrade" in the first menu
it showed the partition screen. It looks like it was
not going to upgrade it, but format it.

I'm concerned when I upgrade over the production 2.1 AS
server data will be removed. I have backups, but I'd
rather don't see this happening.

I have upgraded redhat 6.2, 7.3, 8 many times easily, I
was expecting a painless upgrade with RH AS.

Did I miss something ?
