I would think this is either caused by a kernel/glibc mismatch due to NPTL 
or some packages being miscompiled/misoptimized now since the switch to 
gcc-3.3. I for myself have verified that mozilla-1.4 breaks on PPC if 
compiled by gcc-3.3.
