I use Partition Commander from http://www.v-com.com/ Helps to have someone 
familiar with it show you how to use it the first time. For a dual-boot 
configuration:

1. Defrag Windows partition to make sure files moved to beginning of drive.

2. Insert CD, install. Execute while CD still in drive.

3. For 60GB disk, resize Windows partition to say, 20 GB. Move down all the 
way if necessary.

4. Create two primary partitions in free space, about 15GB for the root / 
partition, and 25GB for the home /home partition, leaving 2GB of free space, 
make them Linux. Choose filesystem, such as ext3. Move down if necessary.

5. If there is an extended partition, resize it to take in the free space. 
If not, create the extended partition in the available free space. An 
existing one may contain the image file used to restore the hard disk with 
Windows. Don't delete that.

6. Create Linux swap partition about or slightly larger than the RAM on your 
system, in the extended partition.

7. I then like to create at least a 1GB "XFER" partition in the extended 
partition, as FAT 32, to provide a working area that both Linux and Windows 
can share without having to make use of a Windows-using tool like win4lin, 
captive, wine/Crossover, etc.
