Looks like there are two PRs fixing this right now

Mine has an additional fix on top to fix the pointer-type mismatches,
and also dropped the compiler flag overrides we no longer need after
the two clean-ups, but caveat lector they are LLM-assisted.

David, could you get either of them merged? If the retirement is
imminent (to add buffer, let's say July 31st, next Friday) I'll merge
and build as provenpackager.
