I never wanted a modem in router mode... Indeed, I run my own router based on Fedora Server with PPPoE. In my case the fiber is terminated in an ONT that has an ethernet port. What I did when getting things working was swap between my router and using the ISP router until I had it all debugged. In your case you could switch the zyxel back into a router to load up the software you need. Then put it into bridge/passthru mode once you have everything.
