Assuming that you're installing from a LiveUSB, don't jump into 
installing right away.  Use GParted, which is part of the Live image, to 
partition the drive, and make sure to give each partition a name that 
tells you what it's for.  (Strictly speaking, you don't need the lables, 
but it makes things much easier if you do.)  You can format the 
partitions then, or let anaconda do it, whichever you prefer.  Then, 
when you start the install process, you just have to select the 
partitions, give them the appropriate mount points and let things go 
from there.  There are two advantages to this: first, you can take your 
time and make sure you've got everything right before you start 
installing and second, as GParted doesn't actually do anything until you 
tell it to, it's easy to correct any errors before you commit yourself. 
I've been doing it this way for decades, either for initial installs on 
a new machine or reinstalling if I feel the need to do a massive cleanup 
of cruft, and never messed things up.  Don't worry if you find the first 
time a bit scary, because that's natural.  The important thing is that 
if you ever need to do it again, it will be much easier.
