Fedor 44 x86_64 KDE login fails

Afteer dnf update KDE login goes to a black screen with just the mouse cursor displayed and frozen. I can login via ssh. No problems with Gnome -- except firefox and google-chrome crash and I have to use chromium. Two PC's exhibit the same problem, one is perfectly OK with KDE after dnf update..
