Fedora 42 Is Shipped Without X11. I Can't Use i3wm Anymore ...
To run an X11 session on Fedora, you need a Display Manager
(DM) that launches X11-based desktop environments or window
managers. Use lightweight Display Managers like LightDM or
SDDM, or the default GDM (which still launches non-GNOME X11
desktops) combined with X11-friendly desktop environments.
Display Managers (DMs) for X11

LightDM: A highly customizable and lightweight display
manager. It seamlessly supports launching X11 desktop sessions
like Cinnamon, MATE, and XFCE.
SDDM: The standard for KDE Plasma and LXQt. It offers built-in
drop-down toggles to choose between Wayland or X11 at login.
GDM (GNOME Display Manager): The default on Fedora
Workstation. While GNOME dropped its native X11 session, GDM
retains the ability to launch non-GNOME X11 desktops.

X11-Compatible Desktop Environments
To get an X11 session, pair these DMs with specific desktop "spins"
or window managers:

    Fedora XFCE
    Fedora MATE-Compiz
    Fedora Cinnamon
    Fedora LXQt
Window managers like i3 or Sway (using XWayland/X11
configuration).

How to Install and Switch
If you are currently on a Wayland-only GNOME setup, you can
switch to a lightweight X11-supported environment directly using
the terminal:

Install your preferred X11-friendly desktop (e.g., XFCE):
    sudo dnf groupinstall "XFCE Desktop"
If using LightDM or SDDM, install the display manager:
    sudo dnf install lightdm
    Enable it and reboot:
    sudo systemctl enable lightdm -f
At the login screen, click your username, check the desktop
session menu, and select X11 (or Xorg).

For a quick look at setting up and modifying display managers and
desktops for X11 on Fedora:

Have 43 and 44 with XFCE
echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE
x11

Use XFCE with TurboVnc as well with local and VNC with no issue.
