Red Hat 7.2 is _very_ old.  However, if you could at least upgrade to
a 2.6-based kernel, you could use q-syscollect/q-view [1] to profile
the app without modifications.  I suspect you'd need to upgrade at
least the module-utils (from modutils to a modutils/init-module-tools
combo) and the procps package.
