HP recommends a low-level format for the system disk if HP-UX was previously installed. You can low-level format the drive by accessing the QLogic Fast!Util utility at boot time (press <alt>-Q when the system starts). Then, select the disk utility, select bus 0, id 0, and press enter (these parameters are for the configuration that HP ships). If you then select Low-Level format, the utility will initialize the drive, completely destroying all of its contents. I did a low-level format before even trying to install RedHat 7.2, and it worked without a hitch.
