Radeck,

Do you get the exact same results of the sound behaviour on many
clients? Various sound cards can present various problems it seems.

The Fedora 14 problem is very odd that your sound works for just a few
seconds then quits. 

Here is a pretty good link, that may give you a better understanding
of Alsa sound and some troubleshooting tips.

When using xfreedesktop or any remote login client can really present
another set of problems as far as sound 'redirection"

If you get each item figured out post back your findings.
