I think that you could probably do the same things under Linux as you do with Windows by using programs written specifically for Linux. I know there are spreadsheets and such programs included in the general distributions. In the boxed set of RedHat 6.2 there is a CD for Staroffice which includes wordproccessing, a spreadsheet, a database, and a presentation program. There are free, downloadable programs available at software.linux.com
