Ok, I'm using a US robotics 5630 serial modem on /dev/ttys0 (the equivalent of the COM1 in windows language) and It works fine on Red Hat 9.0 (and I think It's the same on the 8.0) using KPPP application of KDE suite (It's included in Red Hat cd)... :-) only a suggestion... CHANGE YOUR MAILBOX!!!! HOTMAIL It's Billy's!!!!(and you can't have access by POP3 to it in Linux) :-)
