I am using ifup ppp1 and ifdown ppp1 from command line, and checking 
with top, ifup-p* pops up 3rd from the top only momentarily, then drops 
off the "visible" list of processes. With a maximized xterm, it's not 
anywhere on the list of about 20 running processes. I haven't checked 
to see how far down the list it drops.
