Are you lucky enough to have your machine on a LAN? I ask because back in 
RHL 6 days, the X Window System would sometimes lock up to where nothing I 
did on the keyboards would be noticed, nor moving the mouse.

But I could login using ssh from my other machine and get things going 
again without hitting the panic butten (reset). Just did init 3; then init 
5 and it would be going again.
