If you need help you've to tell us what's your modem :-)
About Gnome, why you don't want to use command line?
Command line is faster... wvdial it's fantastic and easy to configure...
But,If you want to use a GUI, why don't use KDE and KPPP?
They're in your Fedora CDs and I think they're more complete than the 
default program... You can use them when you want and, If you prefer 
Gnome, you haven't to uninstall them and re-install gnome...
It's only my own opinion (and I think you've already thought that I 
don't like Gnome)
