compiling pppd

hi all
I've been learning to use pppd by connecting two pcs.
the pppd version:2.4.1
was trying out some options.
Now ,I got hold of source code for pppd 2.4.1 and compiled it on one
system(say the server)
the problem:when I started to run pppd ....the server kept on sending
packets without receiving any, while the client(which has the old pppd bu=
t of same version)  sends and receives also
and finally both of them time out and quit!

To compile pppd,I read the README.linux  provided which says to do these:
./configure
make
make install

what and where  do u think is the problem?
