I can find the drive and the partition seemed to work... when I try and mount it: mount: block device /dev/hdb1 is write-protected, mounting read-only mount: cannot mount block device /dev/hdb1 read-only The partitioning is a write operation so how can the drive be write protected? Check the jumpers on the drive to see that they make sense. Also check the jumpers on the primary to see if they present a conflict. On some drives, jumpers are for master no slave, master with slave, slave no master, slave with master. Maybe one of them is not correct. Consider moving the drive to the second controller which corresponds with my first email. Having 2 high speed devices on one channel and a comparatively slow CD-ROM on the other isn't optimum. Split the high speed load across both channels. Although it shouldn't matter, there are some BIOS issues with drives as slaves on some boxes. Consider making the second drive a master and the CD-ROM the slave on CH2. Make sure you have KUDZU turned on for this. Its a bit of a risk allowing it to reconfigure for you but I've seen it do it just fine the vast majority of the time. KUDZU will rewrite some config files for you if it can.
