The latest offering from Apple (MAC OS X) is based on FreeBSD. Oracle has also offered up a development version of the server for this version as well. BSD is continuing to be a force after all these years!

I have been looking at FreeBSD and it gives the look of a very solid OS. It
lacks features such as RPM, and also needs a new frame of mind toward
findong and activating scripts, services, etc.

6.2 had it's issues too, IIRC. I remember the compiler was turned out
ahead of it's time, and X was a disaster, causing some problems with
freezing and forced reboots requiring fsck checks. Still a great little OS
without X though.
They seem to have fixed a lot of those issues with the 7.x releases,
namely ext3.
I saw 8.0 in action for the first time yesterday. Lots of gui stuff, no
idea about what they do. A lot of command line tools seemed to be missing
from the base install, they needed to be dug out from the CD's and
installed individually. It's so 'drake-like maybe redhat should be renamed
to redrake or something... :)
They're pushing the server admins to consider other options. I've
been looking at debian. The longer release cycles just might sway me.
