RE: out of space on /

Take a look at /var/logs
There is probably a lot of junk you can dump there.
Having /var and /usr/local on the same partition as / is not the way I'd
normally set things up.
The way you have it, a runaway file, creating all sorts of logs could crash
the system.

Also look in /var for old print jobs.  Sometimes the garbage collector
doesn't.

Look what df -H gives me after I tried to mount / onto a new partition
with lots of free space:

If deleting files now but I can say right now that /dev/hdb1 is empty..
What is going on here?

Is increasing the / partition the only way to create space for more
packages?

I think I may have screwed something up...

Hold on there Bullwinkle! You need to delete some files from your <CR> 
drive. I assume you are using a <CR> drive because your slash was
pointed 
the wrong way. If in fact you were talking about your root filesystem,
you 
probably meant / instead of \.  :-)

Either way, you need to remove something from that filesystem.
