You need to uncomment (take out the dnl in the beginning of the line) for 
both the TRUST_AUTH_MECH and confAUTH_MECHANISMS.  After that you must run 
the m4 macro to rebuild sendmail.cf (instructions at the top of the 
sendmail.mc file) and then restart sendmail.
