Personally ,I liked the answer to the poster very much.
Utimaltely, there is no alternative for learning
and doing one's home work properly.

But what is that keep away from RedHat ?
IBM, HP or Oracle does not want to do that.

Could you share with the rest of us in the list
about the alternative(s) you are using ?

Are you really using/administering RedHat ?

	While a stern kick in the pants is sometimes in order, the attitude
 was of some kind of Linux elitist. Though there are some that temper a
 somewhat elitist attitude with wit,(Ms. Dow for example) a lot of
 people act as if they have no time for newbies. That's not the way I
 learned Linux. I learned by asking some very stupid questions and I
 was usually answered by someone who's attitude was more like, "thanks
 for asking. I eventually learned how to be more specific in google
 searches, where to find doumentation and how to use man pages. But,
 were it not for the friendliness of the people on this list, I might
 very well have given up on Linux all together. A lot of that
 friendliness and helpful attitude has left the list in the 3 years
 I've subscribed. This was only one reason for leaving Red Hat.
	Quite frankly, I got ticked off at RPM dependancy problems, especially
after I had compiled many apps from source. And, I was using Linux, but
not learning much.
	You asked about the alternatives I've chosen. In a word, Gentoo.
Gentoo's portage program is superior to up2date or even apt-get, easier
to keep up to date, and it is totaly free. There are no charges for
priority updates, (I get d'loads of 150- 160 K/sec any time of day). If
I feel like updating my machine I simply type "emerge -u world" and
walk away. There is nothing much more to do other than editing a couple
of config files in /etc.
	Yes it takes a  l  o  n  g  time to build everything from source, but
you end up with a lean, mean, FAST machine. The best part is that I
learned more about Linux in 3 months of Gentoo than 3 years with Red
Hat. This is not Red Hat's fault, I just never really had to learn. Now
I do.
