If by flavors you are referring to RedHat, Debian, etc, then they largely support every kernel version to some degree forward of their initial kernel. Since the Kernel IS the foundation of the Linux OS, the add ons that make RedHat RedHat and Debian Debian are just that - add ons. They all get their kernels from the same place, and so can you. On a typical RH7.2, I've compiled several kernels from www.kernel.org and never had a problem as long as they were greater than the original kernel that came with that release from RedHat.
