Re: Adding a disk to a RAID array

What Elizabeth is getting at, and she used the fancy 5 letter acronym in 
one of her posts, is that there are new regulations on securing personal 
medical information and apparently her Linux box houses data that falls
under these guidelines.  If you have not dealt with the federales and 
these types of security issues then you might not appreciate how stubborn
they can be - and how expensive non-compliance can be.  Stewart just asked
if she is doing backups; backups are good, but realize that backups of 
this data fall under the same security guidelines: they will need to be
stored in a very secure area.  I take it her reluctance to add a 2nd 
server is two-fold:  the extra administration of a second secure server 
(secure here is different than we usually think; it has much more of a 
'guarantee of personal privacy' component and compromise is considered 
a very serious issue with strong consequences) and the cost.  I have worked
in state educational institutions during down economies, and at those
time $$$ are scarce and every available resource is under contention.  She 
has a tough situation and, unfortunately, using H/W RAID 5 makes it 
tougher.  The only clear thing at this point is that she will not be able
to grow the current RAID and will either need to backup, add, rebuild, 
restore, or create a new, parallel RAID then move the data over.  Lots 
more work than she wants, I fear.   And the HIPAA requirements will just 
make it tougher.  Thinking outside the box is good, but I am not sure 
everyone realizes that her problem has such tight constraints.
