up2date (via modem) vs. rpm (via CDROM)?

Whenever there's a new kernel release, it takes me
3-5 days to get my home system updated using up2date.
I have a faster connection at work, so I can download
the .rpms and burn a CDROM.
Assuming I have a CDROM with all (or most? or too
many?? how do I know???) of the rpms required to get
me updated, can I tell up2date to use these files
instead of trying to fetch from RHN? I'm guessing I
could use rpm ("rpm -Uvhp /mnt/cdrom/*.rpm") but I'm
doubting that it will figure out the correct order of
installation, which means I'm assuming that there *IS*
a correct order (eg. glibc-common before glibc-profile
before glibc-2.2.4-32 before ....).
Any direction would be appreciated ....
