Some more info on this.

When I run smbstatus under the new sambe version I get a blank listing. I
am not able to trace the culprit of the continuous generator of processes
AKA pids.

I have since reloaded previous rpm's for samba (2.2.4-31) and everything
works fine again including smbstatus. I'll keep an eye on comments about
sambe-2.2.7-2.7.2
