That indicates a very serious problem (and one that is probably
obvious to fix "if I was there").

Definitely not enough information to help you in any way.

  Is /proc mounted?  Is the root filesystems mounted read-only?
  What is the output of "cat /proc/partitions", "cat /proc/mounts",
  "cat /etc/mtab", "fdisk -l", "mount", and so on?

  (Please don't post all that output to this list, use it to
  diagnose what is going on - it _should_ be obvious).
