Problem with X Server on RH 7.2

I am unable to run the X-server on my system. It was working fine until 
yesterday. I ran Xconfigurator but the problem still persists. Earlier, I 
was able to run the X-server only as root (when I tried to run it as a 
normal user I got an error message saying that I did not have console 
ownership. i friend of mine also has a similar problem, ie not being able 
to run the X-server as an ordinary user).

 I have very little free memory (free -m shows 5MB free+17MB - 
buffers/cache). Could this be the problem? I have about 300MB of disk 
space free.
