A quick Google search showed that this error is not all that uncommon,
and there does seem to be a prevalence of cases with kernel 2.4.18 and
the Intel series Ethernet cards/chips.  Probably a driver issue with 
that kernel version.  Given that, first thing I would try is an upgrade
to 2.4.20; some of those with the problem seem to have solved it with 
an upgrade.
