Do you log into the remote machine directly as root, or do you log in as
a regular user and then `su -` to root? If you try to log in as root,
the system will give you only minimal permissions. That's a security
feature to prevent your machine from being hacked. The proper way is to
log in as a regular user and then do a `su -` to become root.
