Question, how high did the load average get? Was the CPU at 0% idle? If 
so, who was consuming the bulk of the CPU? "user" or "system"?

My guess (and it's just a guess, no more than that) is that there is a 
cgi, perl or php script which is very system-intensive. Best way to 
figure out which one it is it to have top running and monitor the apache 
log files to see which pages are being requested.

Of course you could just have a very popular page on there which is 
getting lots of hits ;)
