Re: DNS Q: 'host fqdn' works, 'ping ip' works, 'ping fqdn' does NOT!

>From the strace I can see that ping is sending using udp ..

send(4, "sE\1\0\0\1\0\0\0\0\0\0\3www\6google\3com\0\0\1\0\1", 32, 0) = 32

But if I look at the strace of the host or dig command, I cant see it 
creating a socket, but it is not trying to do a connect at all. Yet it still 
gets the result.


I am not sure what the host command is doing different to ping when 
resolving the name.
