DNS Q: workaround found

Thanks Keith Maston, My gateway is a Wireless gateway that I have a fixed connection to. It behaves as my DHCP server and dns too. On boot, having DHCP means it is automatically writing the resolv.conf file to be this 'gateway'. But the important thing is that bypassing straight to my ISP DNS means that it works now. There must be something buggy about this gateway which gives this inconsistent behaviour between the host/dig commands and other utilities trying to perform name lookups. The only thing I can think of that explains it is that host/dig is a bit smarter when it comes to resolving names.
