file check wont pass

I am really new with Linux so please bear that in mind if you reply to this post. In other words, might have to tell me very detailed steps needed to solve my problem. 

My system gave me a message that it was shut down badly and performed a file system check. Then I get a message that it wont fix itself and a suggestion to run the check manually without the switches. When I try to enter the command, it says no device selected. I guess I am completely lost. Is this refering to the hard drives? In any event, the machine will not completely boot
