If you login as a user and then you: su And provide the root password when prompted then you will end up with a # prompt BUT the same path as you originally logged in as the user and not the root path. Isn't this disparity the result of doing "su root" versus "su | - root", where the latter behaves as a login shell? I'm going to have to dig more deeply then - I definitely run into this a lot at work.
