I neglected to mention that I googled vsftpd logging problem, and couldn't
find any instances, so I'm asking this group if anyone has had these logging
problems with vsftpd or other applications that might be a Linux
problem/configuration.

VSFTPD (compiled from source, version 1.2.1) isn't writing to
/var/log/xferlog or /var/log/vsftpd.log, even tho /etc/vsftpd.conf is
correctly configured:
