  I'm not sure of an exact fix, but I also run old equipment, (amd
5x86) and 64 mb ram, and my Netscape 4.77 seems to work fairly well. 
  You could try upgrading if you are running and older version, or
look into something like Junkbuster

to filter the popups and ads. My Netscape also will stop animations
using the ESC key. You can test it on a webpage:

                     right-click on the animation and select 'stop
animation.'
