Turn CUPS off and LPRNG on.
Be root, then:
  service cups stop
  service lpd start

When CUPS installs, it sometimes changes /etc/printcap into
something LPR can't deal with, so look for copies of printcap in the
/etc directory with names like printcap.rpmnew, printcap.rpmsave
or anything but printcap

One of them should be the one that used to work. Rename it to printcap
and then:
  service lpd restart

That should be close.
There's a print manager and printer switch applet on the GNOME and KDE
environments that should lead you through most of this, but I'm speaking
from 7.3 and 8.0 where things have become a little different than 7.0.

Good Luck

Subject: I'm new to this can someone help??

    I have redhat 7 running on a 586

    I use redhat up2date

Today 15 Oct I used up2 date & it installed 2 packages one was
called something "cup" a print utility?? the other was "mut"

After the update, my printer doesn't work when I try to print from
netscape browser I get a message;

        Netscape:subprocess diag.... (stdout/stderr)
LPR: error - no default destination available

I can't print from any program, Abiword, editors, etc etc nothing
prints.

I noticed when I rebooted in desperation that I don't seem to be
starting LPR anymore but something with "cup' in it.

I logged in as root & tried to access "print configure" from control
panel but Control panel no longer shows a print configure button.

Clearly I didn't read nor it seems follow the up2date instructions
related to the "new" printer package or whatever, but can any kind
person tell me what to do now??? I need a printer.

Sorry to be a bother,

Regards,

Karen
