Ok.  Let's go back to CUPS.
/sbin/service cups start

Then, to manage your print services launch a brouser to
  http://localhost:631

If you're logged into the 'localhost', you should get a cups admin
menu choice.  When asked for username and password use root.

It's not exactly intuitive, but there's a full set of docs loaded under
the help button and getting a parallel printer to work should be easy.

I just checked mine out on a remote 7.0 system and it's working.

Try naming your printer 'lp' to start with because that's the default for 
most of historical unixes.
