RE: terminal preferences

Assuming you are in X, you could try starting a new one with a command
such as:

xterm -bg black -fg wheat &

This would start a new xterm in which you could at least see what you
were doing.  However, to use the GUIs for setting color preferences for
the window manager, you might still be operating blind.  These are
probably controlled by settings somewhere like apps-defaults files.  If
nobody suggests anything better, you could try reinstalling X, but if
you do, before you do it, set the default bootup mode in /etc/inittab
back to id:3 (not 5), so you will at least have a text-mode session to
work out of until you get X working again.  From there, X can be started
with $startx and exited wity ctl-alt-backspace.
