Re: Firewalling/Masquerading

Robert, a few weeks ago on either this list or one of the other 7.x lists
we had a nice long discussion about this. It might help to check the
archives.
One important piece of advice, an elaborate procedure, and two important
sites come to mind.

First treat linuxconf as a highly contagious and extremely fatally dangerous
virus.

Delete all but traces of linuxconf from your system except for the .rpm.
MOVE, do not copy, the RPM to a floppy disk. Prepare some paraffin such as
used in canning jellies. Obtain some lead foil, aluminum foil will not do.
Wrap the disk in a layer of lead foil then dip it in the paraffin. Repeat
this until you have three full layers. Take this plus a fire hardened oaken
stake to a graveyard on a day before a full Moon. Dig a six foot deep hole
at least big enough for the disk. At the stroke 11:59PM drop the disk into
its grave. At the stroke of midnight drive the oaken stake through the
disk, wrappings and all. Quickly backfill the hole, get home as fast as
possible, and say your prayers. You MAY have successfully exorcised this
horrid beast. It is worse, even, than MiskaDOS from Miskatonic U.

And finally, third, the interesting sites:
http://www.netfilter.org/ and http://ipmasq.cjb.net/. These are rather
invaluable tools. I am using an adaptation of the "stronger" firewall
from the latter site. I've added a few bells and whistles. I believe I
posted it to the psyche Red Hat list recently. (I went back and checked.
I had thought it was to a 7.x list so it is good I did.)
