Yes I am setting up the dial-up networking that way. I am fully aware that I should use PAP authentication but one of the first rules of setting up and testing, as far as I am concerned anyway, is to test as I go along. That way I know when something breaks what is causing that break. I could set up AutoPPP and have exactly the same problem, which I think will be the case and not know if it is AutoPPP that is wrong or something else. This way I know it is something else. I think the appropriate acronym is KISS, Keep It Simple Stupid, no slight on you BTW. Just test small simple chunks and then it is easier to locate the cause. The PPP Howto actually tells you how to set up the way I am doing it and does not cover AutoPPP. It is now uncommon to connect this way but back in the early 1990s it was very common to get a login prompt from an ISP. The whole idea is that once I have authenticated using a standard telnet style dial-up session I can start ppp manually from that session and then start doing the normal ppp stuff. At the moment I am trying to set this up remotely as well so it is usefull to have the ability to get a telnet window before I start ppp so I can change settings before starting ppp. > dns servers do not supply gateway information they just supply ip addresses > for machine names. You probably mean dhcp servers which do. > ppp gateway information is supplied by the client and > it is the address of the server. I can't right now check my w2k machine > but client configuration must supply the gateway information explicitly > or implicitly. I am fully aware what dns does and if you reread my previous post you will see I said dns is configured correctly but the remote machine does not get the default gateway set correctly. At no point to I imply that dns supplies the default gateway. There is no confusion on my part as to what application does what. I was simply highlighting the fact that the ppp server does supply some of the information correctly.
