It depends on the tarball. Usually you can run `make uninstall` to remove the old one, and then `make; make install` to make and install the new one. With tar files, you can have many versions on the same system, and, depending on your path, you may run different versions. *.rpm file handle this better, thus allowing you to easily upgrade to a newer version. Try to find an rpm instead of a tarball of the program. Forrest --
