Backspace not working and OpenOffice script not recognised

Just installed RH7.0 on an old Compaq, am very impressed by it but there are just a few minor niggles.

Firstly for some reason unknown to man my backspace key is refusing to work. Theo nly place it seems to function is in the 
printer configuration tool. All other progs, including terminal, just refuse to use it.

Secondly, I am trying to install OpenOffice and running the 'install' script given the message 'file not found' or something. The 
setup script works though. Permissions are fine  and I've even tried moving the file into /tmp but same problem.
