extract with gtar.
gtar is GNU tar and works (nearly) same as tar

so to test (care path in tarfile!):

gtar tvf ending _tar.gtar

to extract:

gtar xvf ending _tar.gtar

because you downloaded, I would guess, it is a zipped tar-file.
try gtar tzvf ending _tar.gtar or gtar tzvf ending _tar.gtar if you get an
error without the "z"
