Which user are you attempting to login as? SSH by default will not allow
root, for sure, though I'm not sure about other user accounts. Been a while
since I've set it up.

I have downloaded the source for openssh, compiled and installed it and it
did work. however I am having problems in loging in. I always get the
message "permission debied"
