The answers others gave you are too complicated and cumbersome.
If you are in GUI mode, <ctl><alt> F1-F6 will give separate text
consoles. <ctl><alt> F7 will return you to GUI. But remember to
logout when you leave text mode.
However, I don't know why a xterm in GUI mode doesn't give you the
same thing. Multiple xterms can exist on the screen at the same time.
Substitute any other terminal emulator for xterm and there are
several, kterm, Gnome Terminal, etc.
